High CRI COB LED: what is Color Rendering Index (CRI)?

Color rendering index (CRI) is a measure used to quantify the accuracy of rendering colors of a light source compared to a reference or natural light source. This is a method of evaluating light quality based on its ability to reveal the true color of an object, especially when compared to sunlight or other ideal light sources.

CRI is usually expressed in numerical values ranging from 0 to 100, with higher values indicating better color rendering ability. A CRI of 100 means that the light source can accurately present colors like natural sunlight. However, it is worth noting that most artificial light sources (including traditional incandescent and fluorescent lamps) have a CRI of less than 100.

The calculation method of CRI is to compare a set of standardized color samples with the appearance of known CRI under the illumination of the tested light source and the reference light source. Then use the differences in color appearance to calculate the CRI value.

For applications where precise color representation is important, such as photography, art galleries, retail environments, and medical settings, higher CRI is often preferred. However, CRI has its limitations and may not always provide complete images of light source rendered color effects, especially for certain types of lighting techniques and specific colors.

It is worth noting that the color rendering index has been criticized for its limitations in accurately describing color rendering, especially for modern lighting technologies such as LED. Therefore, new indicators and standards have been developed, such as the IES TM-30-18 method, to provide a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of color rendering.
